Our many years of exploring the Great Ocean Road (‘The Road’) has culminated in an experience that not only captures it all but reveals the story of the Great Ocean Road like no other. It’s a big day and this is no mere sightseeing tour…..

With our earlier morning departure from Melbourne, we arrive at the surf coast town of Anglesea in the quiet and soft light of the early morning.

Travelling east to west – following the natural flow of the story of the region – we take time at Memorial Arch, the Roads official start, to unveil its remarkable story. Not only how it was built but what it meant to an Australia ravaged by war and searching for its identity in a such an isolated part of the world in the early 20th century.

Postcard seaside towns and beaches lay ahead of us on our journey as the road traces the shoreline to Lorne.

The road between Lorne and Apollo Bay was the first section completed (by hand) in 1922 and is where it rises from the beaches to trace the cliff faces. It is this section that provides the grandest views and we make multiple stops to capture the best lighting on the day….

At Apollo Bay, we take time out to enjoy a fabulous lunch and a little bit of VIP treatment at our favourite café. You are welcome to dine at our reserved seating (we are the only operator who enjoys this café’) or take away to sit on the beach, just across the road.

After lunch, the Road heads into the ancient rainforests of the Otway Ranges where we will take you on a fully guided walk beneath the towering canopy of a landscape that - believe it or not - covered all of Australia in the time of the dinosaurs.

Emerging from the forest as the anticipation builds, the drama of the Shipwreck Coasts’ sheer limestone cliffs speak of an even earlier time and natures power. Once connected to Antarctica – that is the next stop as you look south and the 12 Apostles are the remnants of that distant time.

We spend the afternoon exploring here, wandering the cliff edges, descending to the beach at Loch Ard Gorge revealing the incredible stories of one of the most treacherous coastlines in the world.

The relaxing journey to Melbourne via Colac is a timely one for catching your breath and recounting a very full day indeed!
